Objectives of Activity:     

Students will understand the costs and savings associated with the integration of renewable technologies into residential facilities.

Description of Course Activity:

Students will perform arithmetic calculations to determine the number of solar panels required to power a house, the savings generated by the adoption of renewable technologies, and the associated capital investment required to purchase the equipment.

Sample Exercise to be used in a INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING course

Objectives of Activity:     

Students will optimize the dimensions of a gutter - a component of a water collection system.

Description of Course Activity:

Students will perform calculations to determine optimal dimensions of a gutter in order to maximize the volume of rainfall water captured by this system.

Sample Exercise to be used in a INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING course

Objectives of Activity:     

Students will prepare a proposal for modifying an existing new home design to improve its sustainability by reducing its resource consumption and improving energy efficiency.

Description of Course Activity:

Students will obtain an existing San Antonio builder’s design, including floor plans and specifications, for a typical, middle income 3 or 4 bedroom new home, then they will select one or two ways to change the home’s design to increase its sustainability and/or reduce resource consumption.
